Finberg suggests,1 perhaps correctly, that this study, made with the page turned horizontally, is related to the painting Fishing Boats Entering Calais Harbour of about 1803 (Frick Collection, New York).2 See also folios 95 recto and 127 recto (D04110, D04145; Turner Bequest LXIX 96, 128).
