With the page turned horizontally, this is one of several studies for Sun Rising through Vapour; Fishermen Cleaning and Selling Fish, exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1807 (National Gallery, London);1 see under folio 12 verso (D04925; Turner Bequest LXXXI 24).This one gives in broad terms the relationship of the various elements of the central part of the composition, including the receding water–line and the position of the sun to the left of the man–o’–war in the centre distance.
