Joseph Mallord William Turner The Lower Half of a Running Figure, with Part of a Kneeling Figure c.1799-1805

Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
Folio 86 Recto:
The Lower Half of a Running Figure, with Part of a Kneeling Figure c.1799–1805
D05071
Turner Bequest LXXXI 169
Ink and black and white chalks on fragments of blue laid paper, 126 x 170 mm and 55 x 242 mm, inset in leaf of modern blue laid paper, 271 x 436 mm
Stamped in black ‘LXXXI–169’ bottom left, descending vertically, on the modern paper

Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
One of the two fragments here is blank. The other contains parts of figures, drawn with the page turned horizontally, which seem to relate to a historical, possibly Biblical subject. The left hand figure, of which only the legs and some drapery are preserved, almost replicates the pose of the running angel on folio 85 recto (D05069; Turner Bequest LXXXI 167).
Technical notes:
The two fragments, together comprising about a quarter of the area of the original leaf, have been set within a sheet of modern blue paper.
