Finberg’s 1909 Inventory entry for page ‘38a. Ben Lomond’1 would normally imply the verso of folio 38 (the recto of the present leaf, D41242, which he numbered LVI 38).2 However, in this case Finberg appears to have intended the ‘a’ suffix to signify an addendum number for the Ben Lomond subject on the page now bound opposite (folio 39 recto; D41244; Turner Bequest LVI 38a). In the confusion he appears to have neglected to record the present page, and in a memorandum dated 14 January 1914, he noted: ‘sketch on back of p.38 should really be 38a, & what is printed as 38a, i.e. Ben Lomond, should be 38d’.3
