This rough study, made with the page turned horizontally, is related to the finished watercolour exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1800, North-east view of the Gothic Abbey (sunset) now building at Fonthill, the seat of W. Beckford, Esq. (Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester).1 A more elaborate preliminary drawing for the work is in the Fonthill sketchbook (Tate D02188; Turner Bequest XLVII 11).
