J.M.W. Turner: Sketchbooks, Drawings and Watercolours

This page was partly torn away before Turner set about drawing a sketch of Aldeburgh upon it. The artist has used the page which remains to render a small part of the view, holding the paper down onto the page below (Tate D18271; Turner Bequest CCIX 59) to draw the rest of the prospect across it. These sketches and those on Tate D18266–D18269, D18272; Turner Bequest 56–57, 59a were developed into a highly finished watercolour drawing of Aldeburgh of around 1826. The design was produced for the England and Wales series and engraved in 1827.
