Drawing from a lofty vantage point behind Arundel Castle (see Tate D18418; Turner Bequest CCX 63), here Turner has rendered a prospect of Arundel and the Arun River valley in West Sussex. The English Channel can be seen beyond. At top right the artist has drawn a separate view of Arundel Park, inscribed with appears to read ‘Old Scotts Clan’. See also Tate D18431–D18433; Turner Bequest CCX 69a–70a. The drawing is associated with Turner’s watercolour designs for W.B. Cooke’s Rivers of England, in particular Arundel Castle on the River Arun (Tate D18140; Turner Bequest CCVIII G). 1
