The subject, with a castle or hill town in the middle distance, and houses or a farm in the foreground, is currently unidentified, but may be Italian. Turner’s uncertain inscriptions may indicate the vicinity of Rogno, in the mountainous region north-east of Bergamo. See also Tate D33780 (Turner Bequest CCCXLI 99).
