The subject is unidentified, but may be an Italian city with domes and towers, a river with two bridges at the centre and a hill to the right, seen beyond trees from a high vantage point; see the Introduction to this section for further brief discussion and dating. Tate D33963, D33964 and D33965 (Turner Bequest CCCXLI 248, 249, 250) may show aspects of the hill in more detail.

There is what a heavy finger print at the bottom centre, and rubbing elsewhere.
