This is one of a large number of sketches on loose sheets of paper depicting hill towns, wooded scenery and rocky coastal terrain, here identified with Turner’s various tours of South of France and Italy. For the grouping and dating of these works, see the section introduction.
Technical Notes:
The sheet is laid down onto a sheet of thick cream paper. On the recto, this bears the pencil note ‘CCLXII 20’ in the bottom right-hand corner. On the verso is the pencil note ‘D25120’. The verso is stamped in black with the Turner Bequest monogram and ‘CCLXII – 20’.
