Naturally not mentioned in Finberg’s 1909 Inventory,1 this ephemeral modern sheet is a reversed offset of the dense ink drawing on Tate D20854 (Turner Bequest CCXXVII a 51), formed as part of the recovery process in the aftermath of the Tate Gallery flood of 1928.
There are two similar instances in the present subsection, and three in the parallel ‘East Cowes Castle’ subsection, as noted in their Introductions; numerous examples related to early figure studies are listed in the Introduction to the ‘Royal Academy c.1789–99’ section.
