Inverted relative to the sketchbook’s foliation, at the top is a view north along the west side of the old town walls of Southampton, with the spire of St Michael’s Church. The vista continues on folio 61 verso opposite (D18109) with the southern return and the spire of Holyrood Church. The western walls then fronted the River Test, but are now landlocked by extensive reclamation and development. Below, and the other way up, is a slight view of a wooded shore, perhaps on the opposite bank. Finberg’s tentative identification of this page and that opposite as showing Southampton1 is the only one confirmed of the very few he made in the whole sketchbook; for other views, see under folio 58 verso (D18102).
