Joseph Mallord William Turner ?A Landscape; the Sun behind Clouds c.1830

Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
Folio 20 Recto:
?A Landscape; the Sun behind Clouds c.1830
D35793
Turner Bequest CCCLXIII 19
Pencil on white wove paper, 98 x 76 mm
Inscribed by Turner in pencil ‘[...]’ at bottom
Inscribed in red ink by John Ruskin ‘19’ top right, ascending vertically
Stamped in black ‘CCCLXIII – 19’ top right, ascending vertically

Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
With the page turned vertically, the disjointed elements towards the top may be landscape features. Turner’s inscription at the gutter, presumably recording some effect of light or colour in relation to the unambiguous lower drawing of a low sun and clouds, is effectively illegible. Compare the hurried notes on folio 6 recto (D35767).
