D35829
Turner Bequest CCCLXIII 40

With the page turned vertically, there are studies of two sailing boats with a tower beyond. They may be the same craft seen in the view of Sandwich from the River Stour made with the sketchbook inverted on folio 40 verso opposite (D35828; Turner Bequest CCCLXIII 39a), which continues inconsequentially towards the left here, at right-angles to the drawing with which it overlaps. There are further studies of shipping on the verso (D35830).
For other views of Sandwich, see under folio 6 recto (D35767).
Technical notes:
As Finberg noted, this leaf is ‘partly torn’ away1 for reasons unknown, leaving less than half of it; its height is thus only 43 mm rather than what would originally have been 98 mm.
