This rapid drawing shows the disk of the sun among clouds low over the sea, rising or setting. The even less coherent drawing on folio 88 recto opposite (D35644) perhaps shows another stage of the same event. See the sketchbook’s Introduction for the many slight coastal and shipping views and inscribed studies of clouds and the sun over the sea scattered through it.
The blank recto is inscribed by John Ruskin in red ink ‘87’ and stamped in black ‘CCCLXI – 87’ at the bottom right. For numerous instances of blank, unaccessioned rectos in this sketchbook, see the technical notes in the Introduction.
