This view along the River Loire towards Nantes in gouache and watercolour on blue paper is one of several depictions of the city which Turner worked up after his 1826 visit to Northern France, apparently in a single painting session.1 It is based on a pencil sketch in the Nantes, Angers and Saumur sketchbook; see entry for Tate D23163, D23165 (Turner Bequest CCXLVIII 7, 8).2 See the Introduction to this section for a list of comparable studies of the city.
