This colour study on blue paper of the castle at Nantes, as seen from the east, is one of several depictions of the city which Turner worked up after his 1826 visit to Northern France, apparently in a single painting session.1 The pencil sketch over which this watercolour and gouache study is built up may have been taken on the spot. 2 See the Introduction to this section for a list of comparable studies of the city.
