This is a view of Hamburg taken from outside the Millernthor, one of the city gates. A windmill on Mühlenberg hill can be seen at left and the Churches of St Nicholas and St Michael are at centre and right respectively. There are also two cursory jottings of female figures in local dress at top left (see also Tate D30871; Turner Bequest CCCV 26). Turner has inscribed notes on the colours of their outfits: ‘B’ [possibly signifying Blue or Black] | ‘Shawl Red’ | ‘Yellow D[ress]’.
