N05048 BLUE HOUSE ON THE SHORE c. 1930–1
Inscr. ‘Paul Nash’ b.l.
Canvas, 16 1/2×29 (42×73·5).
Purchased from the artist through Arthur Tooth & Sons (Knapping Fund) 1939.
Exh: Leicester Galleries, November 1932 (47; not numbered in catalogue but cf. Eates, 1948, p.52); Tooth's, December 1938 (1); Tate Gallery, March–May 1948 (15).
Though in Nash's lifetime dated c. 1927, the year of other more loosely painted views on the Riviera, this picture was not included in his Leicester Galleries exhibition of 1928 and probably reflects his later visit to the south of France in 1930. It shows some influence of de Chirico, about whom Nash wrote an article for The Listener, 29 April 1931. The painting is not represented in the Nash Collection of photographs in the V. & A. Library.
On the back there is an upright landscape with a track leading into the distance past a slender tree, which can be dated c. 1927.
