Painted at Eymoutiers (Haute-Vienne) in the autumn of 1956 at the same time as several landscapes and the portrait 'Two Peasants'. It was the last of a fairly numerous series of trout paintings, five of which were included in his exhibition at the Maison de la Pensée Française in Paris in May 1956.
This picture represents a trout in the water. It is seen half lying on the bed of the river; a bed of sand and gravel (the artist in letter of 28 August 1958).
