See entry on T03741. T03742-T03743 together form part of the same text, which had already been used by Gill in 1903 in one of his earliest inscriptions, which he continued to display on his studio wall (Evan R. Gill, op.cit., 22). It is from the beginning of the Gloria in the Mass, and is translated ‘Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men of good will’.
A photograph of another carving of this inscription (‘Gloria in ALTISSIMIS/DEO/ET IN TERRA PAX’), not recorded by Evan R. Gill, was in the collection of the artist's photographs sold at Sotheby's, 9 November 1981.
