Goscombe John's sculptures can be dated from his regular exhibitions at the Royal Academy between 1886 and 1948. The model for this ‘Pan’ was the bronze statuette ‘Joyance’ shown there in 1901, and this was itself a reduction of a large plaster ‘Joyance’ shown in 1899. A bronze cast of the larger sculpture was commissioned to ornament a fountain in Thompson Park, Cardiff, and had always been displayed there until it was recently destroyed by vandals. A later cast, 69 1/2 ins. high, is in the collection of the National Museum of Wales, Cardiff. Another cast of the statuette, titled ‘Hermes’ and with wings on his feet and a different base, was at the St Louis International Exhibition of 1904 (207, repr.).
The Tate Gallery cast has been made into a ‘Pan’ by the addition of pipes on the base, but whatever he may have held in his hands is missing.
