Lit: John Ruskin, Modern Painters, v, 1888
Like T05199 above, this print was probably intended for the first edition of the fifth volume of Modern Painters (1860), but was not published until the 1888 edition produced by George Allen, where it appeared as illustration no.87 between pages 340 and 341 (immediately following another print by Lupton and Ruskin, no.86, ‘Dawn after the Wreck’). Since the impression catalogued here is printed on India paper laid on wove, it almost certainly comes from the 1888 rather than the 1900 edition (see under T05199), and is probably taken directly from the book itself.
The original watercolour by Turner on which this print is based is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (Wilton 1979, no.1534). Like that for T05199, it was once in the collection of John Ruskin, who provided the etched outlines for the print.
