The Rex Whistler Restaurant at Tate Britain is home to one of the most original restaurants in London bringing together a great modern British menu, award winning wine list and a spectacular mural.
Head chef, Richard Oxley, has created a delightful menu of contemporary British cuisine that suits a broad range of tastes. Highlights of the current menu include seasonal dishes such as Dressed Cornish crab, Fresh pea & baby leek tart with mixed cress, Char-grilled loin of South Devon beef with slow roasted tomatoes and peppercorn jus, Rhug Estate pork with Braeburn relish and buttered carrots, Cherry & chocolate tart and Gooseberry & almond pudding with elderflower sorbet. The attentive service adds to the experience whether you are looking for an exceptional lunch, weekend brunch or a quintessentially British afternoon tea.
As part of the gallery's Late at Tate programme, the Rex Whistler Restaurant offers a special seasonal tasting menu. Head Chef Richard Oxley and Sommeliers Hamish Anderson and Jade Koch work together to produce a five-course menu which they then match with five specially selected wines. The specially commissioned mural which envelopes the restaurant is titled The Expedition in Pursuit of Rare Meats and was finished by Rex Whistler in 1927. In the mural Whistler presents an imaginary world in which Classical, Renaissance and Georgian architecture sit next to ancient chariots, modern bicycles, and landscapes ranging from the far east, jungles and the pastoral European countryside.
