Joshua Reynolds's Discourses, a series of annual lectures delivered at The Royal Academy of Arts between 1769 and 1791, were among the most important art criticism of their time and established the main tenets of Academic theory that went unchallenged for the next hundred years. His principal concerns were an emphasis on sculptural form derived from the study of classical art; the dramatic use of light and shade; and the subordination of detail in favour of eclectic generalisation.
Led by Nick Volley this workshop explores the use of Academic theory in drawing from sculpture and the figure. Practical sessions are combined with discussion and work in the galleries and the Joshua Reynolds: The Creation of Celebrity exhibition.
