Drawn from Life
Art and Anatomy
Led by Martin Myrone, curator of Gothic Nightmares, and Simon Chaplin, senior curator, Hunterian Collection
Wednesday 22 March 2006, 14.00–17.30
The human body is an astounding feat of engineering. For centuries human beings have sought ways to understand its complexities both anatomically and artistically. The contorted figures depicted in the Gothic Nightmares: Fuseli, Blake and the Romantic Imagination exhibition were intended to be as physically accurate as possible. In order to achieve this, many of the featured artists would visit the houses of surgeons and collectors, such as John Hunter (1728–93), to examine anatomical specimens.
This study day includes time at both Tate Britain with Martin Myrone, curator of Gothic Nightmares, and at the Hunterian Collection with senior curator Simon Chaplin.
