Black actor, Paul Robeson, features in both Mining Review (National Coal Board, UK, 1949) 20' and The Proud Valley (Penrose Tennyson, UK, 1939) 77' – two films about British mines and miners. Spanning the decade beginning at the outbreak
of the Second World War, the films focus on the plight of miners and the threat of pit closures on tightly knit communities. Robeson
plays a miner and leading light in the pit choir in the Ealing production The Proud Valley – a documentary style drama. The screening is one of Tate's Black History Month events.
