Chris Ofili:
Beneath the Surface
|
Part of Black History Month
Turner Prize winner Chris Ofili's work is characterised by complex surfaces and sumptuous colours. His images are built up
of multiple layers of collage, resin, paint, glitter, map pins and, most famously, elephant dung. Within these physical layers
are hidden layers of meaning, referencing a wide range of cultural sources. Tate conservator Patricia Smithen explores the challenges of understanding and caring for these paintings, providing a unique opportunity to delve beneath
the surface of Ofili's remarkable works.
This event takes place during Black History Month.
