Mark Kermode's Gothic Film Choice
Possession
Andrzej Zulawski, France/West Germany 1981, 118', cert 18
When Anna (Isabelle Adjani) leaves her husband Marc (Sam Neill), he is convinced that she has taken a new lover and is determined to find out the truth. The reality, however, is darker and more monstrous than he could possibly have imagined. Set in bleak, Cold War Berlin, Possession is notable for its unsettling tone, Adjani’s award-winning performance and an infamous scene in the Berlin subway system.
Cultural critic Mark Kermode introduces this fascinating and gruesome film, and explains its relationship to the Gothic Nightmares: Fuseli, Blake and the Romantic Imagination exhibition.
