Illuminating Cultures
Illuminating Cultures is a three-year initiative starting in September 2009 which will provide teachers and pupils with the
knowledge and confidence to engage with the histories and cultures of the Middle East. Stemming from Tate Britain’s existing
programmes with Syrian and Jordanian partners, the project involves the development of resources focusing on background material
and art works from the Levant and the Tate Collection.
Further details will be published here in September 2009
Supported by the Said Foundation and the Allan and Nesta Ferguson Charitable Trust

VerbalEyes: finding a voice through art
This schools outreach project explores visual and verbal literacy with contemporary artists using the Tate Collection. Over
400 children and their teachers from Newham and Westminster primary and secondary schools collaborate with artists on an art
and language project, which includes trips to Tate Britain and a celebratory family day. Continuing professional development
for school staff is a key part of the programme. Watch out for the VerbalEyes exhibition at Tate Britain in June each year.
Sponsored by Tate & Lyle PLC
Visual Dialogues
Visual Dialogues is initiated and managed by Tate Britain in partnership with art galleries across the UK. Young people aged
15-18 create interpretative resources, displays and audience engagement programmes with contemporary artists in response to
different art works. The programme develops local, national and international links with young people, leading to dynamic
interventions in the gallery and online.
Jointly funded by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) and the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF), Strategic Commissioning
