It is a commonplace of much theoretical work to argue that in practice, representation, display and collection are always
loaded, never neutral, and that exhibition practice is a complicated terrain. Within architecture these arguments are less
well developed.
This conference invites artists, architects and theorists - Gianni Vattimo, muf architects, Jimmie Durham, Richard Layzell, Eyel Weizman, Adrian Rifkin, JoKerr and Brian Jungen - to consider different ways experiences of the built environment can be represented within a space - a space that must,
necessarily , recreate a space.
Recent exhibition practices, influenced by performance, live and sonic art, have begun to stretch the boundaries of what is
possible, while addressing the complications they imagine, and demonstrate the future. In this way the conference considers
the current state of play.
Gianni Vattimo will also be speaking after the symposium.
The conference is organised by Tate Britain and the Art, Philosophy and Visual Culture department at Middlesex University
in conjunction with the Banff International Curatorial Institute at The Banff Centre, Canada.
Tate Britain Auditorium £30 (£25 concessions), booking required Price includes refreshments Symposium attendees will receive a ticket to the Gianni Vattimo lecture.
