Despite entering the Royal Academy as its youngest ever student and ending his career as its president, John Everett Millais’s attitude to the ‘establishment’ of British art was at times considered rebellious. Art historian Colin Cruise considers Millais’s work and its critical reception in relation to this complicated history.
