Joy Sleeman on Richard Long

Friday 17 July 2009, 13.00–14.00

Earth to earth: Richard Long, land art and the moon landing

Long's first footsteps as art were made in the same decade as man's first footsteps on Earth's nearest satellite, the moon. 2009 marks the fortieth anniversary of the first moon landing and also of some of the earliest manifestations of a new landscape art in Europe and America. This lecture explores Long's work in the context of a time of epic explorations of space and in connection with the emergence of new forms of landscape art, as well as tracing some journeys closer to home.

The lecture is a 'satellite' event to Earth-Moon-Earth at the Djanogly Gallery, University of Nottingham (19 June - 9 August 2009), an exhibition curated by Nicholas Alfrey and Joy Sleeman, occasioned by the fortieth anniversary of the first moon landing and focussing on work by David Lamelas and Katie Paterson.
