In 1819 Turner undertook an exploration of the Vatican Museum, making hundreds of drawings of classical remains and sarcophagi therein. Dr. James Hamilton, author of Turner: A Life of Discovery, examines the purposes of these studies, Turner’s interest in the perspectival tricks of Vatican architecture, and his pursuit of Raphael.
