Hilary Spurling
Matisse and British Art
Tate Britain displays one of the nation’s biggest collections of British art and presents a picture of the development of art in Britain from the sixteenth century to the present day.
Through an exploration of work in the Tate Collection, Hilary Spurling, renowned author of a two-volume work on Henri Matisse, examines the relationship Matisse had to English painters such as JMW Turner.
From 1964 to 1970 Spurling was theatre critic and literary editor of the Spectator. Since then she has been a regular book reviewer for the Observer and the Daily Telegraph.
