Derek Wilson
Holbein, Signals and Propaganda

Friday 6 October 2006, 19.15–19.45

Hans Holbein is one of the most famous painters of the sixteenth century, and among his circle were many of the wielders of power and influence. Not only one of the great masters of portraiture, Holbein was also in demand for his murals, jewellery design and revolutionary book illustration.

In this exhibition tour, Derek Wilson discusses Holbein’s work but also his motives, suggesting that there is more to the works than meets the eye. Wilson is author of In the Lion's Court: Power, Ambition and Sudden Death in the Reign of Henry VIII (2001), All the King’s Women: Love Sex and Politics in the Life of Charles II (2004) and most recently Hans Holbein: Portrait of an Unknown Man (1996/2006).

This book coincides with the Pimlico publication of Hans Holbein by Wilson.
