Saturday 18 February 2006, 15.00–16.00

Clive Bloom, professor of English and American studies at Middlesex University and author of Gothic Horror: A Guide for Students and Readers (second edition, Palgrave, 2006), considers the enduring popularity of early Gothic novels and assesses the continuing influence of the Gothic on the more contemporary novels of Patrick McGrath and Angela Carter. Through the works of Henry Fuseli, William Blake and their contemporaries, Bloom considers the Gothic literary phenomenon and its relationship to the visual image.
