Joshua Reynolds
Sarah Greenberg, editor of the Royal Academy of Arts' RA magazine, leads a tour of Joshua Reynolds: The Creation of Celebrity. As the first President of the Royal Academy, Joshua Reynolds was among the most celebrated artists in the western world.
He was a brilliant portraitist with a unique ability to manipulate the media and network effortlessly. Reynolds was a driving force in the emergence of eighteenth-century celebrity culture. Through his portraits he shaped the public image of some of the most famous men and women of the century. From the most fashionable courtesan of the season, Kitty Fisher, to the writer Samuel Johnson, this talk explores a range of characters painted by Reynolds within the context of fame and celebrity.
