Sacred, Sacrosanct or Just Art?
The Politics and Place of Art in the Public Arena

Tuesday 8 November 2005, 18.30–20.00

To coincide with the exhibition John Latham in focus, Tate Britain hosts a panel of leading figures on art, ethics and religion to debate art's claim to cultural independence. In a time of increasing political and social anxiety, Latham's work, with its direct references to canonical texts including the Bible, the Talmud and the Koran, brings to the fore the fraught relationship between the artist's practice and contemporary society.

Speakers include:
Stephen Deuchar, director, Tate Britain
John Latham, artist
Richard Wentworth, artist
Yasmin Alibhai-Brown, writer and broadcaster
Anthony Julius, lawyer and author of Transgressions: The Offences of Art and chair of The London Consortium
Raficq Abdulla, lawyer and poet who has published new interpretations of the Sufi poets Rumi (Words of Paradise) and Attar (Conference of the Birds)
Chair: Tim Marlow, broadcaster
