Resources: Mix tape

Pioneer of the ambient and chillout music genres, DJ Mixmaster Morris has created an exclusive "mixtape" for Tate. Interpreting the global themes of Altermodern in a unique soundscape he blends underground and established music-makers from all genres and locations.

Brotherly Biography

Robin Mullarkey has played bass for acts like Ty and Zero 7, but channels his creativity into Brotherly, his own outfit together with fellow Guildhall graduate, vocalist Anna Stubbs. Influenced by Cuban, Latin and Indian styles, their debut album One Sweet Life showed off their dazzling musical skill, and ability to defy categorization; a second album is out soon.

The Buoys Biography

The Buoys are a three-piece band from Leicester featuring Chris Cousin, whose work as Sofalofa and Chin Chin has been consistently good. Christopher Willits Biography

Christopher teaches Music Technology in SF and makes podcasts for XLR8R magazine, he's also made many CDs including collaborations with Ryuichi Sakamoto and Matmos, and toured with Stars Of The Lid throughout Asia. Here he reworks an 8-bit chiptune from bygone days.

Cornelius Biography

Keigo Oyamada began as a J-pop star, but over time grew into one of Japan's most creative musical artists. Fantastic live shows have gained him lots of admirers around the world,as have the distinctive stop-frame animated videos for his last album Sensuous from which this track is taken.

Dorian Concept Biography

He's a young chap from Vienna, whose 59 sec video on Youtube showed the world how sick his keyboard skills were, and then impressed many at Gilles Peterson's award ceremony. This track comes from Domu's label TrebleO,and his album When Planets Explode is out now on KindredSprits.

Emilio is an Argentine composer who writes Film & TV music, his band Bailongo mix tango and dub, while his debut solo album Panoramico is full of endearing low-budget epics like this one.

Ian Grant started in Hip-Hop but took a winding journey through Black music. With his Likwid Biskit project he defined the Broken Beat aesthetic, and then with New Sector Movements he turned commercial r'n'b on its head. Now he's made another left turn with a solo album for Japan's brilliant Freedom School.

Konono no.1 Biography

Congo's no.1 band was started in 1965 by Mawangu Mingiedi, and took Bazombo Trance music to the wider world with the help of three electric likembés and a homemade soundsystem, then recording with Bjork brought them to a bigger public still.

This multi-talented Japanese performer from Hokkaido makes live electronica as Koss and more recently a brilliant album of piano solos, but is also heavily influenced by African guitar music and spiritual jazz.

Laszlo Hortobagyi Biography

Hortobagyi is a Hungarian musicologist who has studied Oriental music for 40 years, making field recordings and establishing important bodies like "The Oriental Music Archives" and the "Gáyan Uttejak Orchestra" . The short piece here mixes Eastern European scales with those of the Indonesian gamelan.

Matmos Biography

SF duo Matmos famously made a whole CD using only Balloons, but have also coaxed sounds from crayfish, bibles, helium tanks, rhinestones, fetish gear, solid gold bars and a bucket of porridge. Now transplanted to Baltimore they continue to provoke, innovate and entertain.

Mercan Dede Biography

Mercan Dede is a Turkish ney and bendir player, DJ and producer now based in Montreal. He has made many albums over 15 years blending Oriental music with electronic techniques, and toured with a troupe of Sufi dancers. His 2007 album 800 celebrated the life of the poet Rumi and won a major award, but he has announced that he is retiring from music.

MIA Biography

Maya was born in London but grew up in Sri Lanka and India before coming to the UK as a refugee. She got a fine art degree from St.Martins, then did paintings and film work before getting sucked into music making when her first track 'Galang' was a suprise hit. Her second album Kala was made while traveling through Jamaica, Trinidad, Australia, Japan, Liberia and India working with local musicians. This week she was nominated for an Oscar as well.

Mum Biography

Mum are from Iceland, and rhyme with boom not bum. They are gathering quite a following for their optimistic post-rock sounds. This track is from their recent fourth album 'Go Go Smear The Poison Ivy' and somehow manages to be original, but as familiar as an old sweater.

Ovia Biography

A reclusive musician from Copenhagen who uses his Minidiscs to collect organic sounds and then weaves them into fragile webs. He's part of the hotly-tipped Stella Polaris collective, who hold a chillout festival in Denmark every August.

Simbad Biography

Originally from France but now based in East London, Simbad has been shaking up dancefloors for a while. 'Soul Fever' was a huge track, but then he dropped the album Supersonic Revelation, including experimental arpeggiator pieces like this.
