Adult course run jointly with the National Gallery, investigating the role of landscape painting in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Europe and America.

The American Sublime
19-20 April
Two-day academic conference jointly organised with the University of Westminster exploring the social and cultural context for The American Sublime. Topics include notions of the Sublime, the influence of travel and tourism, the represent-ation of Native Americans and the mythology of the West, in painting, literature, photography and film. Speakers include leading British and American scholars, Tim Barringer (Yale), Matthew Gandy (UCL), Michael Hatt (Nottingham), Joni Kinsey (Iowa), Angela Miller (Washington), Alan Morrison, Mary Stewart and Alex Warwick (Westminster), and Andrew Wilton (Tate).

Evening Event
The American Western and Mythologies of the Wild Frontier

The opening up of America's 'wild frontier' has been retold in literature, painting and photography, but the medium best able to capture the scale and strangeness of the new country was film. Historians Ed Buscombe (editor of the BFI Companion to the Western), Christopher Frayling (author of Spaghetti Westerns), and director Stephen Frears (director of Hi-Lo Country) discuss the role of the Western in creating and celebrating the myths of the West and the future of the genre today.

A series of feature films such as Shane (1953) and Dances with Wolves (1990) shown Saturdays at 14.30 from 13 April to 18 May. Documentaries on American Sublime artists shown every Thursday, Friday at 14.30 and Sunday at 16.00 from 4 April to 19 May.
