Born 19 December 1804, Gloucester, Massachusetts
Died 14 August 1865, Gloucester, Massachusetts

Lane was born in the fishing port of Gloucester, Massachusetts, the son of a sailmaker, and had a lifelong love of marine subjects. His early career was spent as a lithographer, until he took up painting in 1840, and began to establish himself as a marine painter. Forced to walk on crutches after a childhood bout of polio, his travelling was limited, but the scenery he encountered on sketching trips to the southern coast of Maine provided him with some of his most successful subjects. He continued to paint until he fell ill in July 1864, and died in the following year.
