Kensett had spent seven years in Europe studying painting, and returned to America in 1847 keen to explore the potential of landscape subjects in his native country. He found ideal American scenery on a trip to the White Mountains in 1850. A Reminiscence of White Mountains, painted in 1852, is probably based on a series of sketches made in Vermont or New Hampshire. The unspoiled vista of the American wilderness contains no sign of human habitation, the silence disturbed only by the sound of ducks taking to the air in the foreground.
