This picture conveys the stillness and silence of the backwoods, while reflecting on the experience of the backwoodsmen whose livelihood depends on the felling of trees. The conspicuous tree-stumps may refer to the tanning industry: tanning made use of the bark of the hemlock, which contains tannin, and a large tannery was established in the neighbourhood of Hunter Mountain.
