Hickbush (1961-5)
Patrick George was introduced to naturalism and outdoor painting by the Euston Road School and by William Coldstream, his teacher at Camberwell School of Art. This picture is painted to a size similar to constable's larger exhibition pictures, his 'six footers'. It also shows a great empathy with Constable's realism and sense of place. It was painted over an extended period from nature outdoors, on land that George worked himself at Grove Farm, Hickbush, Suffolk. |
