Barn at Cherington, Gloucestershire (1935)
Rothenstein bought Iles Farm in 1912, along with fifty-five acres of land, at Far Oakridge, near Stroud, overlooking the Golden Valley. He renovated it and settled there, keeping a house in the area until his death. Rothenstein made many pictures of the farm and neighbouring villages. He wrote, 'Stone buildings always move me - austere in grey weather, pale, livid even, against a stormy sky, they are warm and sparkling in the sunlight'. |
