Lady Fishing - Mrs Ormond (1889)
Sargent shows his sister Violet fishing on the river Avon at Fladbury in the Vale of Evesham, where he had rented a local rectory. Sargent was one of a number of wealthy Americans who, inspired by William Morris's example, discovered the pleasures of the Cotswolds in the 1880s. With others such as the novelist Henry James and the painter Francis David Millet, he created an informal colony at Broadway. Sargent had trained in Paris and been influenced by the French Impressionists, as can be seen in the broad brushstrokes an bright colours of this 'plein air' scene. |
