 The Emigrants (1883-9)
Although this painting was inspired by the same subject
as Thomas Faed's Last of the Clan, McTaggart presents a highly
original and unsentimental interpretation of the Highland clearances
and emigration of people from the west coast to live in Canada and Australia.
Emigrants are shown rowing out from a lonely stretch of coast to meet
a sailing ship. McTaggart had first hand experience of such emigration
in his own family.
