Cerne Abbas Walk (1975)
Long has based many of his works on walks in the ancient British landscape. Here he made a 'six day walk over all roads and double tracks inside a six mile wide circle centred on the giant of Cerne Abbas'. The 55-metre-long chalk figure of the legendary priapic giant is shown on the Ordnance Survey map and on a tourist photo. Long's walking has a ritualised quality about it; the giant, perhaps of the second century AD, is an appropriate focus for this obsessive activity. The main photo shows a view Long thought typical of the local landscape. |
