Eric Ravilious
The Vale of the White Horse
(circa 1939)
Eric Ravilious - The Vale of the White Horse © Tate, London 2002 © Tate, London 2002

Ravilious, a native of Sussex, was fascinated by English chalk land and the mysteries of its ancient inhabitants. Here he chooses an unusual low viewpoint of the famous Bronze Age white horse chalk figure if Uffington, Berkshire. The effect is strange and perhaps threatening.

The 110-metre-long figure lies on the Downs where the Ridgeway meets Ickneild Way. The surrounding landscape is full of ancient stones, hillforts and tracks. GK Chesterton wrote a poem about the horse which he said 'knew England/When there was none to know.'
